"Spherical Accretion onto a Magnetic Dipole: Numerical Simulations"
Numerical axisymmetric MHD simulations of spherical accretion onto a
magnetic
dipole were performed. Stationary flow was found in simulation of spherical
accretion onto a non-rotating dipole. Dependences of the
flow geometry (for example, position of the equatorial Alfven point) and of
the
integral properties (such as accretion rate) on the system parameters were
established. Accretion rate onto dipole is always smaller than accretion
rate
onto corresponding star without magnetic field. Non-stationary equatorial
outflow was found in simulation of accretion onto a fast-rotating dipole.
Application of results to the problem of the detectability of isolated old
neutron stars (IONS), accreting from interstellar medium, is also discussed.
