Chandra Observation of LMXB in M84

We present characteristics of the X-ray point source population in the M84 field as observed by Chandra ACIS-S. We find the galactic sources in M84 follow the stellar light profile, which imposes similar formation histories for stars in both single and binary systems. After correcting for incompleteness in the source detection, we find a log N-log S similar to that of the elliptical galaxy NGC4697. Source hardness ratios can be modeled by separating into two spectral classes of galactic sources, those with a multi-temperature black-body disk and those with a power law with a soft component, while the remaining sources exhibit the X-ray colors expected from constituents of the Cosmic X-ray Background. We propose a method to test the presence of inter-galactic star-light using the LMXB's as a trace population and discuss particular application of this method to observations of the Virgo cluster.
