Abstract

Current views on the formation and evolution of galaxies, stars, and various types of stellar systems are surveyed, with evolution traced from the superdense primordial fireball through to white dwarfs, neutron stars, and black holes. Contributions by the panel of authors include: galaxies and star formation, characteristics of galaxies and systems of galaxies, adiabatic theory of galactic formation, vortex theory of the origin of galaxies and systems of galaxies, activity of galactic nuclei and quasars, star clusters, large-scale dynamics of the interstellar medium and formation of stars belonging to the disk population, nucleosynthesis, final stages of stellar evolution (pulsars, neutron stars, black holes), and the development of evolutionary concepts in stellar astronomy.
