Abstract

A classical approach (i.e., the Friedmann theory of Hubble expansion) is taken to the overall expansion of the universe and to galaxy formation. A classical homogeneous and isotropic solution is found for fluid motion subject to gravitational interaction, and approximate nonlinear perturbation theory is developed for galactic-cluster perturbations. It is stressed that hydrodynamic and Newtonian gravitation theories are fully applicable to explaining the expansion of the universe and the formation of galaxies.
