Abstract

This review deals with quantum evaporation of black holes, nonconservation of baryon charge in black holes, and the existence of mini black holes. These questions are discussed in the framework of a world model in which there exist only gravity and massive Dirac particles with spin of 1/2; the particles are assumed to experience only gravitational interaction. It is suggested that Hawking's (1974) theorem and his approximations of a slowly varying classical gravitational field are inapplicable for black-hole masses of 0.00001 gram or less. The thermodynamic equilibrium of evaporating black holes is considered, and the formation and subsequent evaporation of black holes is related to the separation of some discrete topologically unconnected closed world from 'our' space. Possibilities for developing a unified field theory consistent with Dirac's (1937) large-numbers hypothesis are assessed.
