Abstract

The problem of using observations of galactic clusters as sources of cosmological information is examined. Optical X-ray and radio observational data on rich galactic clusters are reviewed. The interaction of the microwave background with the hot intergalactic gas is discussed, with particular attention given to the dependence of the thermal effect on frequency and clusters as sources of submillimeter radiation. The types of information that can be obtained from astrophysical studies of the microwave background in the direction of galactic clusters and from radio observations of clusters are examined. Finally, the possibility of determining the peculiar velocity of clusters is discussed along with the microwave background as a 'new ether'.
