Abstract

The 'black' regions devoid of galaxies surrounded by closed and comparatively thin 'bright' layers populated by galaxies, which characterizes the global structure of the universe, are given a qualitative explanation. It is assumed that 60-80 per cent of the matter in the universe, by weight, belongs to the bright regions, whose density is about 10 times the average for the universe. The interpretations presented rest on general arguments concerning the growth of large scale perturbations in a cold gas.
