Abstract

The topological structure of the universe on a scale of a few to 100 Mpc is examined, reviewing the results of recent theoretical investigations. The model considered associates an adiabatic, 'pancake' galaxy-formation mechanism with an alignment of superclusters in thin walls and strings surrounding large regions virtually devoid of galaxies, as predicted by computer simulations. The application of percolation theory to observational data on galaxy distribution confirms the existence of some network-like structures, and it has also been demonstrated that the adiabatic galaxy-formation model is better able to predict the observed percolation properties. Hierarchic models predict lower percolation rates which would fit a cluster distribution of galaxies. It is suggested that both kinds of structures may exist in the present epoch.
