Abstract

The pancake theory of the formation of the large-scale structure of the universe is discussed. Efforts to determine the existence of the cosmological scale and of the massive neutrinos required by the theory are summarized. The physical processes that took place after the first few milliseconds of the big bang and led to the formation of 'pancakes' are described, as is the eventual formation of the present cellular structure of the universe. The main problem of the pancake theory, that the homogeneity of the radiation background implies fluctuations so small that the birth of galaxies becomes almost impossible, is addressed, and the potential for the massive neutrino's solving the problem is considered.
