Abstract

Selected aspects of current cosmological theory are discussed in a historical review. The progress of cosmology is attributed to improvements in observational technique and in the field of theoretical physics and to the willingness of individual scientists to challenge established conceptions. The Hot Big Bang theory and the periodization of cosmological evolution are introduced, and the history of increasing insight into the nature of the transparent universe, the structure of the universe and its provenance, the baryon asymmetry of the universe, the inflationary phase of the very very early universe, the possibility of the quantum birth of the universe, and the cosmological constant is traced and illustrated.
