Abstract

This review attempts to acquaint astronomers with recent concepts dealing with the cosmological consequences of contemporary theories of elementary particles and their interactions. The development of scalar-field theory is described; the properties of scalar fields are discussed; and the reasons behind the introduction of Higgs particles are explained. The relationship between the inflationary expansion of the universe and the existence of scalar fields with a Higgs potential is examined. Various inflationary models are considered.
